CBD Guide: What It Is & What It Does

The world of cannabis can be complex. Once, there was a time when most cannabis consumers were only familiar with one cannabinoid within cannabis: almighty THC, known for its potent high, with psychedelic effects that last for hours. Now, there are multiple other chemicals within cannabis that are being likewise celebrated for their efficacy in various areas of treatment and recreation alike. One such compound that is on virtually everyone’s lips lately is CBD. Products featuring CBD can be purchased at Sacramento marijuana dispensaries or wherever cannabis products are found.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a special compound within cannabis that is responsible for the unique properties of the plant distinct from THC. Whereas THC has a reputation for instilling powerful, psychoactive cerebral effects, cannabidiol is much milder in its impact on the body, and will not result in a typical cannabis “high.”

While it is not yet fully understood by science, it has taken off in terms of its popularity. “CBD mania” has swept the country in the form of an entire industry unto itself, yes, but the hype has extended further into specialized retail outlets and even CBD cafes. But why are so many people interested in it and its effects?

Effects

CBD has been lauded as a miracle substance in recent years, with anecdotal evidence arising that the compound, when distilled, is effective in the treatment of a plethora of physical conditions and other ailments. It is said to be potent in its ability to relieve pain, as well as promote a restful state of mind.

These restful effects don’t manifest in the form of a traditional buzzy “high” as they would with THC, but one may recognize the feeling of CBD from smoking or otherwise ingesting cannabis. In fact, some strains of cannabis contain more cannabidiolthan others, and some strains have been developed with the purpose of expressing as much CBD as possible.

Uses for CBD

CBD has developed a substantial base of consumers through its documented ability to alleviate pain and other physical discomforts. Not long after inhaling smoke from a CBD-rich strain, many report that their body is settled into a deeply relaxed mood.

For some individuals, it may be used as a milder alternative to smoking cannabis. In fact, there are quite a few people who prefer CBD simply because it imparts the mellow effects of cannabis without the possibility of an overbearing high that may be uncomfortable to certain people.

Types of Products

Just as there are many THC-rich cannabis products available for purchase at a Sacramento marijuana dispensary and elsewhere, so too is there an enormous variety of products accessible on the modern market. Most THC products have their cannabidiol equivalent, including intensive strains, edibles, and tinctures.

Cannabidiol is legal across the United States, which means that most CBD products can be ordered and transported from anywhere in the country. However, medical professionals should be consulted before using cannabidiol for the purpose of treating any condition. Want to learn more about cannabinoids? Check out our post on CBN.
