We are passionate about engaging and inspiring the public with our work.

Widening access is more than just an act of inclusivity. It’s an investment in unlocking untapped potential, bringing forth fresh perspectives and nurturing a society that values curiosity and critical thinking.

We know that not all people have the same access to opportunities so we work with our local communities, schools and universities across the country to open up new possibilities to aspiring scientists.

By actively promoting public engagement with all sectors of society, our exhibitions, events, education programmes and digital resources serve to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and public understanding.  

Our outreach is having impact but our successes are only the beginning of our aspirations.

Delivering education with impact   

We take seriously our responsibility to inspire the next generation of scientists.   

With a shortage of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) students in the UK, helping young people to understand, challenge and embrace scientific research has never been more important.

Our education and outreach team delivers engaging workshops at both our on-site Weston Discovery Lab and at local primary schools.   

Every year we offer 50-100 secondary education students a range of transformative work experience placements at the Crick, giving them a taste of the many roles associated with biomedical research.   

Our positive impact on pupils’ aspirations and attainment is paving the way for the scientists of tomorrow.  

Widening access to research careers

The Crick is committed to increasing diversity and promoting an inclusive culture in science.  

As part of this, we operate a nine-week summer programme every year open to undergraduate students from disadvantaged or under-represented groups.

This scheme gives high-potential candidates the opportunity to gain valuable paid laboratory experience, take part in various academic training events and engage with the scientific community at the Crick.

Initiatives like the summer student programme will help widen participation in science and build a more diverse pipeline of talent for the Crick and beyond.

Cancer Research UK works in partnership with the Crick to attract and secure philanthropic support for the Crick’s pioneering work. The Crick is one of the funding priorities of Cancer Research UK's 'More research, less cancer' campaign.
For this arrangement to be possible, Cancer Research UK and the Crick operate as joint controllers of personal data. This involves jointly determining the purpose and means of processing information about donors and prospective donors, including sharing the information with each other and undertaking due diligence checks.
