Pietro is a clinician scientist with over 10 years experience in neurodegeneration research. He completed his medical  and specialist Neurology training at the University of Milan.

His research activity started at the University of Southern California where he investigated protein degradation alterations in muscle degenerative diseases. He then worked on hereditary neuropathies by characterising novel mouse models of disease.

His ALS work started in 2009 at KCL, and he then moved to UCL where he obtained his PhD in Lizzy Fisher's lab with an MRC/MNDA Lady Edith Wolfson Fellowship. He established his laboratory in 2015 at the UCL Institute of Neurology with an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship, focussing his work on RNA processing alterations in ALS. He also started and leads the National Kennedy's disease clinic and the MND Genetics clinic at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

He consolidated his laboratory in 2019 with an MRC Senior Clinical Fellowship and started a Satellite at the Crick in 2023.
