Course info

This online training course is designed for individuals who perform humane killing techniques of rodents, specifically mice, using Schedule 1 methods, but who are not performing regulated procedures or holding animal care responsibilities.

With a strong focus on the application of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement), this course provides comprehensive training on the legal, ethical, theoretical and practical aspects of killing animals in scientific research.

Through this training, you will gain knowledge of mouse biology and behaviour, humane killing methods, and how these practices can impact scientific outcomes. You will develop essential handling techniques, including how to safely restrain and return a mouse to its cage in a calm, confident and empathetic manner, minimising stress and potential harm to the animal.

The course also explores the broader societal perspectives surrounding the scientific use and humane killing of animals, to enable you to contribute to a culture of care within your research environment. Additional topics include recognising normal and abnormal mouse behaviours, strategies for minimising pain and distress, basic workplace hygiene, proper clinical waste disposal, and identifying symptoms of laboratory animal allergies.

It incorporates interactive elements, video demonstrations and assessments to reinforce learning. You will also have opportunities to engage directly with the trainers , creating a supportive and interactive online learning experience.

This course has been developed by the Crick’s Biological Research Facility (BRF) team, experienced professionals with extensive expertise in laboratory animal care and welfare, ensuring the content is both practical and aligned with best practices in the field. The course’s modules and learning outcomes are detailed below.
