Emily Martyn

Doctoral Clinical Fellow

Emily is a Crick Doctoral Clinical fellow in the Matthews hepatitis B virus (HBV) elimination laboratory and an Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology Specialty Registrar in the NHS.

Before becoming interested in HBV research, she spent time in Uganda working on clinical trials aiming to improve outcomes in HIV-associated meningitis. Her PhD is focussed on investigating the interplay between two major global causes of liver disease morbidity and mortality: HBV and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) using several techniques: cell culture, lipidomics and analysing retrospective clinical data. In addition, she has a keen interest in inclusion health, which refers to making healthcare available for people who may experience social exclusion, for example people experiencing homelessness or vulnerable migrants, and has been involved in several projects with University College London Hospitals' Find & Treat team.
