Alex Gould

Alex Gould is a Principal Group Leader, Wellcome Trust Investigator, and head of the Physiology and Metabolism Laboratory. He obtained his BA and MA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, UK. His PhD research was on Drosophila Hox genes with Rob White at the University of Cambridge. Alex then undertook postdoctoral research on vertebrate Hox genes as a Beit Memorial Fellow with Robb Krumlauf at the Medical Research Council's National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Mill Hill.

Alex established his own research group at NIMR in 1998. In 2012, he was appointed head of the NIMR's newly formed Division of Physiology & Metabolism. In 2015, he was appointed as Senior Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute, London.

Alex was elected to EMBO in 2008 and was awarded the Hooke Medal of the British Society for Cell Biology in 2011. He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2013 and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 2022. Alex serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Science Advances, Development and PLOS Biology and sits on various funding committees, including the Royal Society University Research Fellowships Panel.

Current research focuses on the molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms regulating growth and metabolism. The laboratory works with several model systems, including the fruit fly Drosophila, and uses a range of genetic, molecular, microscopy and metabolomics techniques.
